Church audit on disability and community
Have you taken the audit?
Are you looking to deepen and develop
your church's ministry in the areas of disability and community? We can
help!
Your church and disability
Approximately one in five people of working age have a disability, so
if you have no disabled people in your congregation you need to be
asking why not. If there are disabled people in your congregation, how
are they involved? Are they consulted about important church decisions –
related to disability as well as other issues? Are they encouraged to
exercise their gifts to build up the church?
We know it takes more than a ramp to be an open, welcoming community.
Here's how we can help:
If your church is full of disabled people who are integrated and
contributing to the life of your church we want to know how you do it.
Your story could help us to inspire other churches to become more
inclusive communities.
Tell us what you do by using our online story form.
Your church and community
If you feel you are just at the beginning of a journey to get more
involved in your local area, you are in good company! Lots of other
churches are in the same position and Livability has some great
resources designed to help you to see your church and your area
changed.
Here's how we can help:
- The Community Mission website, run in partnership with Tearfund is full of inspiration and help. If you're not sure where to start, start here.
- We produce a Questionnaire pack, which makes it easy to get to know your neighbours and find out what they think about your area.
- And our Just People? course, or another course or process could help inspire your congregation to get involved.
- We run regular training courses, on a range of issues like a day on how to get the most out of volunteers and maintaining your Christian distinctive.
- We also offer a regular eNewsletter, which offers a round-up of events, resources and funding sources designed to help churches and Christian community projects. Sign up free.
- Depending on your location, you can even ask one of our Community Mission advisors to come and visit your church –
they can work with you to help your congregation get inspired and build
a vision for your area, and then figure out how to get stuck in. Email Jill Clark or call 020 7452 2018 for more information.
We need to know more! We collect and share inspiring stories of
churches reaching out to their community, and we’d love to hear your
story. You can type your church’s story straight into our website here and start encouraging and inspiring others straight away. We look forward to hearing from you!
Your church and mission
Do you know that here in the UK, one in three disabled people live
below the poverty line? That disabled people are twice as likely to
leave education without qualifications, and even if qualified, twice as
likely to fail to find work? It’s a justice issue right on our
doorsteps: today there are disabled people living in isolation and
poverty in your town. But very few people are speaking out for this
hidden group.
Could your church join Livability in standing up for disabled people?
It’s a huge challenge, but together we can make a real difference in
people’s lives. We are always looking for volunteers, campaigners and
people who can support us financially or in prayer. And we’ve got plenty
of resources to help your church engage with disabled people in your
community.
Here's how we can help:
- If your church would like to join Livability in speaking out for disabled people, there are plenty of ways to get involved
- Could a group from your church support us in prayer? Here are some prayer resources
- Want to make a financial contribution to changing the lives of disabled people? We’ve got plenty of ideas for raising money
